@StevenKaye, that seems a very North American perspective.
I think the difference is that Jaiku is a presence service, and Twitter a status-update/microblogging thing. If you hold a 3G mobile phone in your hand the difference is very clear. I never thought Twitter was anywhere comparable with Jaiku.
@tonzylstra, @StevenKaye, the North American phone scene has been inferior for years. That will certainly inflect our attitudes. Can't wait to try Jaiku on a real device.
@StevenKaye The Jaiku mobile client lets your contacts see whatever digital traces you let your profile collect (like sharing my geographic location, or my latest photo's automatically) . Twitter requires me to always explicitly formulate a bit of text and send it out. In Jaiku the messaging thing was a late addition. It shares my presence info without me having to pay attention to it. I feel that is way less intrusive and a much more 'peripheral awareness' experience than e.g. the SMS capabilities of Twitter. SMS is too interruptive, so I never let Twitter send anything to my phone except for direct messages from 1 or 2 people.
can't see the point of MySpace (Twitter?) vs. Facebook (Jaiku?).
i agree with ton about Twitter's SMS, but using it now only as a mobile site via Opera.
but haven't really got the jaiku mobile experience thing myself for now. will try again now, like everyone.
yes, i've read this, and it sure makes sense with myspace / fb. but twitter? the look & feel may be more mainstream, simple & fun-oriented, but i wouldn't describe this in class terms. the opposition of offensively tasteless flashy trash aesthetics of My Space and the rather collected (slightly boring) fb interface is rather different ...
